About AFTER

You may have more questions once you get home from the emergency department. AFTER helps you understand what comes next and prepare for your follow-up.

Franck Tameze-Rivas

Franck Tameze-Rivas

MD, MBA · Board-certified emergency physician

He writes the guides, reviews every one before it goes up, and is responsible for what is on this site.

AFTER is independent. It is not connected to any hospital, health system, or employer, carries no institutional branding, and nobody pays to appear here.

What it is

AFTER offers free, general health information for the days between your emergency visit and your next doctor's appointment. The guides use plain language and are designed to be easy to read on your phone.

It adds to the discharge papers you were given. It does not replace them, and it does not replace your own doctor. Every guide ends by pointing you back to them, because that is where the rest of your care happens.

How a guide gets written

  1. Each topic starts as a research note built from clinical evidence and specialty references.
  2. A guide is drafted from that note, with every claim tied back to its source.
  3. Each claim is checked against those sources.
  4. The draft is independently reviewed for anything overstated, missing, or misleading.
  5. Nothing goes up until Dr. Tameze-Rivas has read it and approved it.

A guide that says the evidence is unclear says so, and one that would only be reassuring by leaving something out does not go up.

What it is not

It is not advice about you. It cannot be. It does not know your history, your medicines, or what your examination showed. It is general information about a condition, and the person who can turn that into advice is your own doctor.

The guides are written for adults. Where the advice is different for a child, or is meant for the person looking after one, the guide says so in that spot. Nothing here is a substitute for the instructions you left the emergency department with.

If something is happening right now that frightens you, this site is the wrong place. Go to the nearest emergency department, or call 911.

What we keep

There are no accounts, no logins, and no way to message anyone here. What you type into the recovery tool is saved only in this browser, on this device. It never leaves it, is never sent to us or anyone else, and is gone if you clear your browser data. Nothing you search for on this site is stored at all.

Questions about your health

Ask your own doctor, not this site

Please ask your own doctor about your care; this site cannot answer personal health questions. Comments about unclear wording, broken links, or errors are welcome. Please keep personal health questions for the doctor who knows you.
